Two Key Growth Drivers Shape Guyana’s Expanding Economy: Investment and Tourism
Let’s hone in on two parallel growth drivers of Guyana’s economy that are increasingly converging: large-scale investment linked to its energy sector, and the rapid expansion of local tourism.
On the investment side, the Government’s call for private participation in downstream projects, including a US$300M fertiliser facility and a US$40M gas bottling plant with projected 10% annual returns, reflects a clear strategy to move beyond oil production into value-added industries such as manufacturing, logistics, and distribution. This signals growing opportunities for businesses to engage across the wider energy value chain, rather than at the upstream level alone, as industries scale quickly in response to one of the fastest-growing economies globally.
That same economic momentum translates into increased international visibility and movement, with Guyana’s sustained high GDP growth, (recorded at over 30% in recent years), driving greater business travel, investor interest, and global attention. This surge is directly feeding into the tourism sector, where visitor arrivals rose by 22% in 2025, with projections reaching approximately 550,000 by 2026. In response, the development of a National Tourism Policy is focused on bringing structure and standards to a sector that is expanding rapidly, ensuring that infrastructure, product development, and service quality keep pace with rising demand while maintaining sustainability and community participation.
For SGCC members, the significance lies in this linkage. Investment-led growth is not only creating opportunities within energy and industry, but also driving demand across hospitality, transport, and cross-border services. As more visitors, investors, and businesses engage with Guyana, the opportunity extends regionally - particularly in connecting with Suriname’s established eco-tourism and service offerings. This is already beginning to take shape, with collaborative products such as the cross-border Dutch Heritage Tour, launched at IBC Guyana 2024 by Evergreen Adventures, which highlights shared historical sites across both countries. Initiatives like this point to the next phase of regional integration, where tourism and investment intersect, and platforms such as IBC Suriname 2026 will continue to play a key role in bringing these opportunities to market.
