Suriname Expands Digital Infrastructure Through New International Connectivity Partnership

May 19, 20261 min read

Suriname is taking another step toward strengthening its digital infrastructure and international connectivity following the announcement of a new partnership between Telesur and EllaLink for the development of the Caribbean Gateway submarine cable system.

Under the agreement, Suriname becomes the first country to formally join the initiative, which is expected to provide diversified international connectivity routes linking Suriname directly to Europe, Brazil, and the United States. The project forms part of Telesur’s long-term strategy to modernize the country’s telecommunications infrastructure and support future digital growth.

The initiative is particularly relevant as industries globally continue accelerating digital transformation and data-driven operations. Improved connectivity infrastructure has the potential to strengthen Suriname’s competitiveness in sectors such as oil and gas, logistics, financial services, technology, education, and international business operations.

For the private sector, enhanced digital infrastructure can contribute to improved operational efficiency, cloud connectivity, cybersecurity resilience, and access to global markets and service providers. It also positions Suriname more favorably for foreign direct investment and future technology-based industries.

For SGCC members, developments such as these highlight the increasing importance of digital readiness and infrastructure resilience as Suriname advances toward a more globally integrated economy. Investments in connectivity and technological modernization are expected to play an important role in supporting long-term business growth and innovation across multiple sectors
