SGCC Welcomes New British High Commissioner to Guyana, Joseph Fisher MBE
The Suriname-Guyana Chamber of Commerce extends a warm welcome to His Excellency Joseph Guy Fisher MBE, the newly appointed British High Commissioner to the Republic of Guyana. Mr. Fisher assumed office in April 2026 and also serves as the United Kingdom’s Non-Resident Ambassador-Designate to the Republic of Suriname and Ambassador-Designate to CARICOM.
His arrival comes at an important time for Guyana, Suriname, and the wider Caribbean, as the region continues to attract growing international attention around energy, infrastructure, trade, climate resilience, investment, and private-sector development. Following the presentation of his Letters of Credence to President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, discussions reportedly focused on deepening Guyana-UK relations across key areas including healthcare, education, security, climate change, biodiversity, environmental services, tourism, and infrastructure.
For the SGCC, this appointment is particularly significant given Mr. Fisher’s dual accreditation to both Guyana and Suriname, as well as his wider CARICOM role. The Chamber continues to advocate for stronger cross-border cooperation, improved trade facilitation, and greater regional business connectivity between Guyana, Suriname, and international partners. The United Kingdom remains an important partner in this space, particularly as businesses seek access to financing, technical expertise, institutional partnerships, and new market opportunities.
The strengthening of UK-Guyana relations also aligns with the growing role of UK Export Finance in supporting Guyana’s development agenda. Recent reports noted that UKEF’s financing capacity for Guyana has increased to £3 billion, signalling continued confidence in Guyana’s economic growth and the opportunities emerging across priority sectors.
Mr. Fisher brings significant diplomatic, foreign policy, and national security experience to his new role. According to GOV.UK, his previous assignments include serving at 10 Downing Street as Private Secretary to the National Security Adviser, Deputy Principal Private Secretary to the Foreign Secretary, and senior roles within the UK Cabinet Office National Security Secretariat. He has also held overseas postings and development-related roles in Myanmar and Afghanistan.
The SGCC congratulates His Excellency Joseph Fisher MBE on his appointment and looks forward to constructive engagement with the British High Commission in Georgetown. As Guyana and Suriname continue to position themselves as strategic gateways for trade, investment, energy, infrastructure, and regional development, partnerships with the United Kingdom can play a meaningful role in supporting sustainable growth and private-sector collaboration.
We welcome High Commissioner Fisher to Guyana and the wider region and wish him every success in advancing the UK’s partnership with Guyana, Suriname, and CARICOM.
