SGCC Members Identify Practical Priorities for a Stronger Suriname–Guyana Business Corridor

The Suriname-Guyana Chamber of Commerce (SGCC) is advancing a solutions-focused bilateral advocacy agenda following its 2026 Members’ Forum, where business representatives from Suriname, Guyana and beyond shared practical experiences of doing business across the two markets.

The consultation identified four areas requiring focused attention: transport connectivity, particularly the Canawaima Ferry; cross-border taxation; trade regulations, customs and standards; and the wider ease of doing business across both countries.

While these challenges are not new, the Forum’s emphasis was firmly on solutions. Members called for greater predictability, clearer regulatory information, stronger institutional coordination and practical mechanisms to reduce the cost and complexity of operating across the border.

SGCC will now work to translate these experiences into evidence-based recommendations and targeted engagement with relevant public and private-sector stakeholders in both countries.

This will include documenting verified business cases, advancing discussions on Canawaima Ferry reform, examining taxation and payment barriers, engaging customs and standards authorities, and mapping administrative bottlenecks affecting cross-border operations.

The Chamber will also explore the development of a Digital Cross-Border Compliance & Trade Information Hub, providing businesses with accessible guidance on customs, taxation, import and export procedures, labour requirements, standards, licensing and documentation.

For SGCC, the objective is clear: move from identifying barriers to developing practical, measurable solutions.

As economic ties between Guyana and Suriname deepen, the ease with which businesses can move people, goods, capital and services across the border must deepen with them. Through sustained dialogue and collaboration, SGCC will continue working toward a bilateral business environment that is more connected, predictable, efficient and competitive.
