The Suriname-Guyana Chamber of Commerce (SGCC) was honored to attend the official Celebration of Guyana’s 60th Independence, hosted by the Embassy of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana in Suriname under the leadership of His Excellency Ambassador Virjanand Depoo and Mrs. Sandra Depoo.
The distinguished diplomatic reception brought together members of the diplomatic corps, government officials, private sector leaders, and invited guests in commemorating this historic milestone for the Cooperative Republic of Guyana.
Held at the Royal Ballroom of Torarica Resort on May 25, 2026, the evening served as a strong reflection of the growing partnership and strategic relationship between Guyana and Suriname, while celebrating Guyana’s journey, achievements, and regional significance over the past six decades.
During his address, Ambassador Virjanand Depoo delivered a powerful message centered on moving “from borders to bridges,” emphasizing the importance of regional unity, collaboration, and solidarity between Guyana and Suriname. He highlighted the critical role both nations play in shaping the future of the region through stronger diplomatic, economic, and people-to-people relations.
Ambassador Depoo further underscored the importance of standing together as neighboring nations amidst a rapidly evolving regional and global landscape, while also recognizing the role of the Suriname-Guyana Chamber of Commerce in strengthening private sector connectivity and advancing cross-border business collaboration.
The ceremony also featured remarks by the Honourable Minister Adelien Wijnerman of the Ministry of Finance and Planning of Suriname, who reflected on the significance of sovereignty, the strengthening bilateral agenda between Guyana and Suriname, and the importance of continued cooperation between both nations in pursuit of regional growth, stability, and economic advancement.
Adding a cultural and celebratory element to the evening, Ambassador Depoo introduced guests to a special Guyanese rum brought directly from Guyana for the occasion. Members of the diplomatic corps, government officials, and invited guests were given the opportunity to experience and celebrate a proud element of Guyanese heritage and hospitality.
SGCC extends its congratulations to the people and Government of Guyana on the celebration of Guyana’s 60th Independence and remains committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen regional integration, bilateral trade, diplomacy, and private sector collaboration between Suriname and Guyana.
