Guyana’s Global Energy Spotlight at OTC Signals Expanding Opportunities Across the Value Chain

May 04, 20263 min read

As global industry leaders convened at the 2026 Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston, Guyana’s presence extended beyond visibility to thought leadership, with President Dr. Irfaan Ali delivering a keynote that reframed how emerging energy economies can navigate the global transition.

Central to his address was the concept of “energy balance,” a recognition that the transition to renewables is not a simple replacement of fossil fuels, but the simultaneous development of two interconnected systems. As global energy demand continues to rise, Ali underscored that hydrocarbons will remain critical in the present, even as investments accelerate toward renewable and low-carbon solutions for the future.

Guyana, he noted, is actively demonstrating this model through a dual-track strategy: expanding offshore oil production while channeling revenues into transformative onshore energy and climate initiatives. At the heart of this is the country’s flagship Gas-to-Energy project, which will utilize offshore natural gas to deliver more affordable, reliable electricity, support industrial expansion, and modernize the national grid.

This integrated approach is supported by broader investments in grid infrastructure, storage systems, and renewable deployment across regions, alongside efforts to build a diversified energy mix by 2030. Importantly, this strategy is underpinned by Guyana’s environmental credentials, including one of the world’s lowest deforestation rates and its Low Carbon Development Strategy 2030, which enables the country to monetize forest-based climate services while reinvesting in sustainable development.

Against this backdrop, private sector engagement continues to expand. Guyana’s delegation to OTC has grown to nearly 100 businesses, reflecting increasing international and regional interest not only in upstream oil and gas, but across the broader value chain, from logistics and engineering to agriculture, services, and industrial support.

At the operational level, this momentum remains evident. ExxonMobil Guyana continues to advance new exploration and development activity within the Stabroek Block, while projects such as Longtail signal sustained capital deployment. At the same time, innovations like the commissioning of the iNOVaTHERM™ system by a local joint venture highlight how environmental solutions are evolving alongside production, reinforcing the role of technology in enabling more sustainable operations.

For the private sector, the implications are clear. Guyana’s energy narrative is no longer confined to extraction; it is increasingly defined by system-wide transformation, where infrastructure, environmental services, workforce development, and industrial capacity all play a role in supporting a more complex and integrated energy ecosystem.

For SGCC and its members, this evolution presents tangible opportunities. As Guyana positions itself as a model for balancing energy growth with sustainability, there is growing space for Suriname-Guyana collaboration across supply chains, technical services, and industrial development. Platforms such as OTC and Suriname Energy Oil and Gas Summit (SEOGS), alongside SGCC-led missions, remain critical in ensuring businesses are not only aware of these shifts but strategically positioned to engage them.

As articulated on the global stage, Guyana’s message is both practical and forward-looking: energy security, economic growth, and environmental stewardship are not competing priorities - they can, and must, be pursued together. For regional businesses, the focus now turns to alignment, building the capabilities, partnerships, and readiness required to participate in one of the world’s fastest-evolving energy markets.
