Guyana’s Expanding Energy Sector Continues to Create New Regional Opportunities

April 20, 20262 min read

Guyana’s oil and gas sector is entering a more mature phase, marked not only by production growth, but also by deeper market reach, stricter environmental oversight, expanding infrastructure, and rising demand for skills and specialist services. Together, these shifts continue to create important openings for businesses across Guyana, Suriname, and the wider region.

Internationally, Guyana’s crude is gaining stronger traction in major markets such as India, where demand for light to medium sweet crude supports the country’s growing profile as a reliable energy supplier. At the same time, the offshore development pipeline remains active, with future projects and subsea infrastructure requirements signaling sustained investment across the decade ahead. Interest in prospects such as Jethro on the Orinduik Block also suggests that Guyana’s offshore story is still evolving, with additional development potential under consideration.

The sector is becoming more structured and accountable; Environmental permits have become stricter over time, with stronger requirements for emissions controls, flaring limits, monitoring, spill preparedness, and financial assurance. This reflects an important shift as Guyana seeks to balance rapid petroleum growth with environmental protection and long-term national stewardship.

The sector’s expansion is also driving workforce development: The University of Guyana’s Open Day and Job Fair, alongside growing participation from oil, marine, logistics, and offshore service companies, such as Pandora Energy, Western Logistics, SBM Offshore, MODEC, and ExxonMobil, demonstrates how talent development is becoming increasingly central to the country’s energy future. As demand rises for technical, operational, marine, and support services, the need for regional expertise and private sector engagement will only increase.

For SGCC members, this matters on multiple levels. It reinforces the importance of staying positioned within the evolving Suriname-Guyana value chain, whether through service provision, partnerships, workforce solutions, compliance support, logistics, or investment facilitation. As Guyana’s energy sector deepens and becomes more interconnected with regional markets, SGCC remains well placed to help members identify where those opportunities are emerging and how best to engage them.
