Guyana Expands Agricultural Output While Preparing for Climate Risks

May 19, 20262 min read

Guyana’s agriculture sector continues to show strong growth, with rice production already surpassing 800,000 tonnes before the halfway point of 2026, placing the industry on track for another record year. Officials have attributed the increase not to major expansion in cultivated acreage, but to improved yields, better crop management, upgraded drainage and irrigation systems, enhanced seed varieties, and targeted farmer support.

At the same time, the government is continuing efforts to diversify agricultural production and strengthen rural incomes. In Region Nine, a new apiculture initiative was recently launched to expand honey production and create additional economic opportunities for communities, particularly women. Investments in hives, technical training, and market access form part of broader efforts to strengthen value-added agriculture and support livelihoods in hinterland regions.

However, the sector’s continued expansion is unfolding alongside increasing climate concerns. Guyana’s Hydrometeorological Service has warned that El Niño conditions are likely to develop within the coming months, potentially bringing prolonged dry spells, higher temperatures, water shortages, and increased wildfire risks later this year. The outlook raises concerns for crop yields, livestock production, and water availability, particularly in vulnerable inland regions.

Together, these developments highlight both the opportunities and vulnerabilities shaping Guyana’s agricultural landscape. For SGCC and its members, the evolving environment reinforces the importance of regional collaboration in areas such as food security, climate resilience, agro-processing, agricultural technology, logistics, and sustainable supply chain development across the Suriname-Guyana corridor.
